Interview With Steve Cradock

If any band out there knows the meaning of the saying 'It's a marathon, not a sprint' then it's Ocean Colour Scene. Even though they formed in 1991 it wasn't until the mid-1990s that they hit the proverbial big time. Positioning themselves among Britpop's finest, between 1996 and 1998 they were like dog poo in the park: everywhere. Sell-out tours, guests on TFI Friday entering the studio to The Riverboat Song, radio stations played them 24/7 and they enjoyed the patronage of the Modfather himself, Paul Weller (a relationship that exists to this day). Ahead of Sunday's gig, EG spoke to guitarist Steve Cradock.

Q. You rode the Britpop wave with bands like Blur and Oasis; were you a bit overwhelmed?

A. Not really. We took it in our stride. A lot of the other bands all decamped down to London but we stayed up in Birmingham. As a result we were able to keep our feet on the ground.

Q. Were you aware at the time that you were in the middle of England's most exciting musical period since punk?

A. Most definitely. And I can tell you the day when that feeling hit us -- when we walked out onto the stage at Knebworth, supporting Oasis, in front of 250,000 people!
