Review: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds At The Manchester Apollo

Noel Gallagher made a triumphant return to Manchester last night for the first time since Oasis split.

The songwriter and guitarist immediately divided the sell-out audience as he swayed onto the stage to the Manchester City anthem Blue Moon.

His outing at the Apollo was the first gig on home soil for the Burnage-raised star’s new outfit Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

They were formed in the wreckage of Oasis, who split amid rumours of tossed guitars and hurled fruit in 2009.

Brother Liam has already toured with his new band Beady Eye (Oasis without Noel) – playing the same venue in March.

Outside the Ardwick venue, touts were asking for up to £250 for spare tickets, but there were few takers.

With more than a hint of irony, Noel kicked things off with Oasis track It’s Good To Be Free. New song Mucky Fingers was lapped up by an energetic crowd.

Although the band’s eponymous album was released only two weeks ago, the audience seemed to know every word to the anthemic Everybody’s On The Run.

But the showstopper was a haunting acoustic version of Oasis favourite Wonderwall, backed by just a piano.

It was immediately followed by an equally low-fi Supersonic, the crowd almost drowning out the lyrics with chants of ‘Noel, Noel’ echoing through the venue.

The singer replied by asking: “You all got your Stone Roses tickets then?”

The Apollo gig was intended as a warm-up for a host of UK arena dates, giving a lucky few the chance to see their hero in relatively small surroundings.

When Noel heads home again, on February 13, it will be in front of thousands more at the M.E.N. Arena.

Based on this performance he won’t have many looking back in anger.
